Issue #15 Review
What Happened That You Have To Know About:
It’s easy to see what they had in mind for this issue. Blok, Tyroc and Dawnstar on the cover to draw in the old readers, and a section at the back to explain who was in the Legion these days. It’s an obvious on-ramp for people who used to read the Legion, who don’t read it any more, but who might be sucked back in if Waid and Kitson made it really easy for them. I wonder how well it worked.
Anyway, I really enjoyed it. Basically this issue was a bunch of small-L legionnaires sitting around a campfire telling superhero tales. Only the superhero tales are about previous versions of the Legion interfering in previous Crisis-type crossover stories. So we get to see Wildfire and Dawnstar and Blok and Sensor Girl and Quislet and the White Witch. Good times. Okay, maybe it doesn’t Advance a Major Arc, but who says it has to? It’s good Legion storytelling and that’s what I want.
The only thing that bugged me a bit was the part at the end where one of the legionnaires told the others—and us—that they shouldn’t worry about whether these stories “actually happened” or not, as long as the stories inspire them. I’m going to have more to say about the continuity issue in a column one of these days, but for now let me just say this: I can’t stop worrying about continuity if you keep telling me not to worry about continuity! Tell your stories and have done!
